Dr Jonathan Tummons, University of Durham, Establishing professionalism for teachers in the learning and skills sector

Back to April

12:15 PM, 29 April 2015 to 3:15 PM, 29 April 2015 at This event will be located in Lockside Building. A light sandwich lunch will be provided and available from 12pm and the speaker will commence at 12.15pm. Full joining information will be provided in advance of the date for bookings.

In this seminar Dr Jonathan Tummons will outline ongoing research relating to the extent to which professional standards for teachers in the learning and skills sector do - or do not - work to establish constructs of professionalism. As the sector gets to grips with the third such set of standards to have been published during the last fifteen years, the question  to answer is: "what do professional standards actually do?" Drawing on both empirical and theoretical arguments, Dr Tummons will suggest that the relationship between professional standards and professional practice in the 'real world' of the college workplace is problematic and that subsequent changes to professional frameworks have served to distance them from the practitioners that they claim to nurture.
