Fourth warmest July

Huddersfield saw its fourth warmest July since our records began with temperatures not falling below double figures.  It was also a very dry month with a below average rainfall and 21 days without rain.  The Met Office stated that it was the equal-8th warmest July in a series from 1910, but not as warm as July 2013.  July 2004 was the 8th consecutive month with above average temperatures for the UK.  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences weather station.

The monthly mean temperature for was 18.6˚C (average 17.2˚C).  The warmest day of the month was Friday 25th with an average temperature of 21.9 ˚C.  The highest maximum temperature of 29.5˚C was recorded on Saturday 26th – the highest temperature so far this year.  The coldest day of the month with a very respectable temperature of 15.6˚C (average 12.7˚C) was Sunday 6th; the lowest minimum temperature of 10.4˚C was also recorded on this day. 

A total of 38.2mm of rainfall was recorded during the month compared to the average figure for July of 59.8mm.  The wettest day of the month was Saturday 12th with 12.8mm of rain – 33.5% of the month’s total.  Twenty one days of the month had no rain with the driest spell falling between Sunday 20th and Friday 25th inclusive.

The mean wind speed for the month was 10.37km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 18km/hr recorded on Thursday 3rd; the maximum gust for the month of 80.64km/hr was also recorded on this day.

The prevailing wind direction was south west.
