Adriana Tavares graduated from the Textile Crafts BA(Hons) degree in July 2014. After attending the New Designers exhibition in London she was put forward by her tutor to the curators of the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair. Adriana was selected to be an exhibitor on the Emerging Makers stand, which is dedicated to new businesses and designers taking their first steps into the industry.

The GNCCF returned to Manchester from 9 – 12 October to unite people with a passion for beautiful and distinctive handmade items with the designers who design and make them. The unique event brought together over 160 of the most talented UK designers and craft practitioners under one roof at the Old Granada Studios in Manchester.

Whilst exhibiting at GNCCF, Adriana’s ‘if you can draw it you can tuft it’ project was also on show at The National Centre for Craft and Design in their Class of 2014 exhibition. Only 15 graduates were selected for this show, chosen from all of the graduates who exhibited at New Designers 2014.

Adriana spoke to us about these exciting opportunities: “From the moment I found out about the chance to exhibit [at GNCCF] I started preparing work as I knew I wanted to show a whole new range. I wanted this collection to be completely different to what I had shown before to assure viewers that I am still pushing the boundaries through my designs and that I have moved forward since New Designers.

“For the past couple of months I have been working on this new collection and it has received a great response. I have also been working alongside the University’s Enterprise Team who has awarded me with a Proof of Concept Grant to help bring my designs to reality. Having all of this support and guidance has had such a positive influence on my future and it has really started to bring more opportunities to light.”

Following on from these recent exhibitions, Adriana will be preparing a collection of work to show at Edinburgh Contemporary Crafts whilst undertaking an MA by Research here at the University of Huddersfield. These events have given Adriana exposure in the industry and she has recently been featured in Craft Magazine’s 250th issue and Cover Magazine’s Autumn 2014 issue.
