Having graduated from the University's Music Technology and Popular Music BA (Hons), musician Adam Smith took his MA by Research with tutor Dr Rupert Till, Director of the Popular Music Studies Research Group. Adam focused his Master’s on songwriting, and the influence of 1960s and 1970s psychedelia on British songwriters such as John Lennon of the Beatles and Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. With his MA under his belt, Adam joined band Temples, whose sound is also influenced by the likes of Lennon and Barrett, and who fall within what some have termed “neo psych”, new psychedelic bands.

Adam joined the band as they were forming, knowing the other members from his home town of Kettering. Since then he has toured the USA and Europe, recorded Radio 1 sessions, played at Glastonbury, supported the Rolling Stones at their Hyde Park concert, been new band of the day in the Guardian and one of “five new bands you’ll love” in the NME. Recently they made their daytime TV debut on Ellen Degeneres’ talk show; you can see the performance here.

The band is beginning to write and record their second album, their first having risen to number 7 in the album charts. They are also amongst 10 bands nominated by Q Magazine for the award of Best New Act - you can vote here.  Good luck, Adam!
