The University’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology will host delegates from around the world

THE University of Huddersfield’s EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Advanced Metrology is establishing itself as the focal point for regular international conferences.

In March 2015, the Centre hosts the Laser Metrology, Co-ordinate Measuring Machine and Machine Tool Performance conference and exhibition, known as LAMDAMAP

euspen logo Organised by euspen – the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology – this bi-annual event is one of Europe’s key conferences in its field and a major showcase for cutting-edge research and new technological developments.  The previous LAMDAMAP was held in 2013, hosted by the Royal Society’s Chicheley Hall.

Professor Liam Blunt Professor Liam Blunt (pictured right), who is research leader at the EPSRC Centre, is a member of the euspen Council and he offered the University of Huddersfield as a venue for the 2015 LAMDAMAP.

“We are very proud to be hosting this event,” he said.  “The conference will be a fantastic opportunity for us to present our world-leading metrology and machine tool research.  We’re also looking forward to welcoming delegates from around the world to hear about their research developments.”

Professor Blunt said that the EPSRC Centre – launched in 2011 after receiving funding of more than £7 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and from industrial partners – had set itself a target of hosting an international conference every 18 months.

Previous events have included conferences dealing with computer-aided tolerancing, plus metrology and the properties of engineering surfaces.  In 2016, the Centre is due to welcome the Laser Metrology Conference organised by IMEKO – the International Measurement Confederation.

Professor Blunt is in no doubt about the value of hosting conferences that draw academic and industrial experts from around the world.

“Having these events adds to our knowledge base and gives us a higher profile within the discipline.  And it certainly makes a difference when you are looking to build consortia for new funds, for joint publications or for developing new links with industry,” he said.

The LAMDAMAP Conference takes place on 17th and 18th March in 2015 and will include a poster session, exhibition and networking opportunities.  An exhibition by metrology equipment suppliers will be staged at the University’s 3M Buckley Innovative Centre.  A wide range of topics will be covered by papers and presentations.  They include the new area of additive manufacturing – or 3D printing – and metrology.  Details of the conference have been posted by on the euspen website.
