Today the Students’ Union are pleased to announce the launch of a brand new service for University of Huddersfield students HudBooks

Over the past six months they have been working with a current University of Huddersfield student Sam Forrest to develop his own business idea Uni Media Mash for students to access and trade their second hand text books at no cost through an easy to use online platform.  The website is really simple to use, and all you need to do is follow five simple steps:

  1. Register an account via your University email address
  2. Search for the books you need on your course
  3. Find an individual selling it, and offer them an amount of cash
  4. Arrange a meeting via the automated process to exchange your cash for their book
  5. Upload your own books to start making some money

University books can be expensive, and one of the objectives of Handbooks is to positively impact on your finances. Second hand books mean that students will be able to access vital course materials without spending loads of money on brand new copies each and every year.  It also gives second, third and fourth years an option to make a bit of money themselves.

Students' Union President Josh Elderfield and Vice President Education Mike McGougan have been leading on the project as one of the recommendation's from last year's Extra Course Costs campaign, which found that books were overwhelmingly the single most cited additional cost for students. They say:

"It's great to finally see the service launched - working with a current student to develop something we know others desperately need, putting more money back into students' pockets. It's a great example of what the Students' Union can do when members get involved!”
