Dyslexia Matters

Dyslexia Awareness Week at the University will take place on Monday 3 November to Friday 7 November in association with the British Dyslexia Association.

Dyslexia is a hidden condition and defined by the Equality Act 2010 as a disability. 10% of the British population are dyslexic with 4% severely so.

The theme of the awareness week on Monday 3 November to Friday 7 November is Dyslexia Matters. It matters to us as a University because we want to continue to ensure that our students fulfil their potential and our staff understand the difficulties that people with dyslexia face so they can provide the right kind of support. With this in mind, you are invited to ‘Dyslexia Matters’ - a lecture on Thursday 6 November at 5.45pm in Quayside. The lecture will discuss:

  • An overview of the nature and range of dyslexia
  • Strategies for supporting students in Higher Education, focusing on inclusive strategies that can be adopted in teaching and learning settings
  • Ways of potentially identifying a learner with dyslexia

The lecture will be delivered by staff from the Educational Guidance Service - the educational psychologists who carry out dyslexia assessments at the University.

Following the lecture, everyone is invited to stay for wine, soft drinks and snacks. During this time, you can chat with some of the staff who currently deliver the support to dyslexic students to find out more about how this works. There will be Educational Psychologists, Dyslexia Tutors and Disability Advisers.

Throughout the week, there will be a stall in Student Central – next to the Students’ Union shop. There will be a range of information about the support available to students with dyslexia and a member of staff will be on this stall between 12.00pm to 2.00pm each day.
