The University Research Fund (URF) provides an opportunity to support and accelerate the development of the research programmes at the University complementing external funding and direct School investment. The fund supports the delivery of the University Research Strategy, helping to drive momentum by investing in multidisciplinary research growth across the University.

Successful bids 2014

In July 2014, each School submitted their bids to the URF panel. In total, the 40 bids had a value of £9.89m. So far, £1.54m has been awarded to 14 different bids, to be distributed over the next three years.

A combination of single School bids and collaborative, cross-School bids were successful. Each bid was assessed and judged to be of importance to at least one of the following areas:

  • Capacity building

  • Area of Strategic Research Importance (ASRI)

  • Development of strategic international research partnerships

Successful bids cover a wide range of research areas including skin interface sciences, criminology, the built environment, linguistics, visualisation, robotics, new music and nanoscale imaging.

Future bidding rounds

Bidding rounds are planned to take place annually from May 2015. The next round will be preceded by an Expression of Interest phase to start in February, with successful EOI applicants invited to submit full proposals in May 2015. The panel will review the proposals in June 2015 and meet to consider assessments and inform decisions.  New projects will commence from the start of next financial year (2015-2016).
