Thu, 13 Nov 2014 14:44:00 GMT

Our congratulations go to newly graduated Social Work BSc(Hons) student Laura Bradshaw, who has been honoured with three awards in recognition of her outstanding academic results and commitment to the very best of social work practice.

Laura Bradshaw (SW award winner 2014)

Laura’s accolades include the University’s Chancellor’s Prize, the Dean’s Prize for Academic Achievement, and the Dr Richard Smith Memorial Award.

Awarded in memory of an inspirational friend, colleague and teacher, the Dr Richard Smith Memorial Award is given to a Social Work student who has demonstrated that they have ‘broken barriers’ through work with service users and through challenging discriminatory attitudes and practise.

Paul Hollingdale, Senior Lecturer comments “Our congratulations go to Laura. She has demonstrated an ability to engage with all people, and did so with respect and dignity. Laura also received a commendation from West Yorkshire Police for the work and support she provided to a vulnerable person”.

Additionally, our congratulations go to Vivian Chan and Alison Holden who have received the Yip Sau Kuen award and the Lee Dutton Memorial Award respectively.

Vivian, a current second year student, has shown wonderful enthusiasm and commitment to her social work education and has voluntarily sought out opportunities to enhance her learning and understanding of social work in England.

Vivian Chan (SW award winner 2014)

“Vivian has freely shared her knowledge and experiences of how social work operates from an international perspective, based on work she undertakes in her home country, Hong Kong” explains Mr Hollingdale. “She has been an excellent ambassador for the University across a number of NGO agencies and Higher Education Institutions in Hong Kong.”

The Yip Sau Kuen award is in memory of Cecilia (葉 秀 娟), who trained as a social worker at the University of Huddersfield in the early 1990s and died in May 2010.  The award reflects her personal courage and resilience and her commitment to others, and is awarded to students who have shown great personal resilience throughout their studies.

Alison, a former graduate of the University, is now employed as a social worker by the local authority in Calderdale. She receives the Lee Dutton Memorial award, which is jointly sponsored by the University of Huddersfield and Calderdale Children’s Services.

Alison Holden (SW award winner 2014)

Lee Dutton tragically died in 2012. After completing his MSc Social Work at the University he began working with Calderdale and showed that he had the potential to be an outstanding social worker.  The award is given to a student who has demonstrated an outstanding piece of work in communicating with a child or young person.

Our congratulations go to all three award winners.
