Professor Gow received his Honorary Doctorate of the University for services to education
Professor Ian Gow OBE was appointed Principal of the Sino-British College, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST), on 1st January 2009 and has since been Special Advisor to the President of USST on internationalisation and Chairman of the University’s Advisory Board of the British Culture Centre.
In 2007, Professor Gow was presented with a number of awards for his work as the founding Provost of China’s first Sino-foreign university, the University of Nottingham Ningbo China at Ningbo. These included the Camelia Award from the Municipal Government of Ningbo and the West Lake Award from the Province of Zhejiang for outstanding contribution to higher education. He was also appointed International Adviser to the Ningbo Municipal Education Bureau. In the British New Year’s Honours List of the same year, Professor Gow was awarded the OBE for his services to British Higher Education in China. He was also awarded an emeritus professorship in East Asian Studies from the University of the West of England.
Professor Gow holds a PhD in Japanese Studies and has published in both Japanese and English on Japanese history, politics and management. Prior to his appointment at the Sino-British University College, he held senior positions in Japanese studies and business schools and also served as Pro Vice-Chancellor at the universities of Stirling, Sheffield, Nottingham and the West of England. In September this year, he was awarded his third Chinese government award, the highly prestigious Magnolia Award for his services to international education in Shanghai. He was also awarded an honorary professorship of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.
Professor Gow has strongly supported the development of Japanese studies and, over the last two decades, Chinese Studies and Sino-British relations, establishing China centres at the universities of Sheffield and Nottingham. He was also a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s (HEFCE) Committee on Chinese Studies and was the lead academic on HEFCE’s Sino-UK Management of Change Project.

Professor Gow holds distinguished professorships from Tongji University, Wanli University and Hunan University in China and was special adviser to the President of Hunan University. He has also has been a visiting professor at Tokyo and Saitama universities in Japan and a member of the UK-Japan 21 Group as well as serving as a member of the UK Government’s Office of Science and Technology’s Asia-Pacific Science and Technology Committee. He was also a member of the Steering Committee of the Economic and Social Research Council’s Pacific Asia Project. Professor Gow also served as Special Adviser to the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and Training and was responsible for the design that received funding for the planned Vietnam UK University.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society Arts and Commerce and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Linguists.
