Particularly warm for the time of year
October was a particularly warm month for the time of year. Halloween was the fourth warmest October day since 1990. Although there was below average rainfall only eight days of the month escaped rain. The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences weather station.
It was the fourth warmest October since our records began. The monthly mean temperature was 12.6˚C, one and a half degrees centigrade higher than the average figure for October of 11.1˚C, making it the warmest October since 2006. The warmest day of the month with an average temperature of 17.4˚C was Friday 31st; the highest maximum temperature of 21.5˚C was also recorded on this day. The coldest day of the month was Tuesday 7th with an average temperature of 8.4˚C. The lowest minimum temperature of 4.5˚C was recorded on Saturday 4th.
A total of 54.2mm of rainfall was recorded during the month compared to the average figure for October of 77.7mm. The wettest day of the month was Wednesday 15th with 8.4mm of rainfall (15.5% of the month’s total). Only eight days of the month escaped rainfall with no significant dry spells.
The mean wind speed for the month was 12.24km/hr. The highest mean wind speed was 33.84km/hr recorded on Monday 13th. The highest gust of wind for the whole month was 109.8km/hr recorded on Tuesday 21st.
The prevailing wind direction was southwest.
