Viewers of BBC One’s Look North – broadcast from Leeds – saw veteran presenter Harry Gration and Amy Garcia attempt the intricate arm and leg movements that are integral to the traditional Indian dance style guided by University of Huddersfield researcher Hardeep Singh Sahota.

Hardeep is a leading authority on bhangra and its migration to the UK, where the Panjabi community in Huddersfield played a key role is establishing the dance and its music in a new home.

Hardeep completed a research-based Master’s degree here at the University and followed it up with a Heritage Lottery Fund project named Bhangra Renaissance.  He has now completed a ground-breaking and lavishly-illustrated book named Bhangra: Mystics, Music and Migration, published by the University of Huddersfield Press.
