The University welcomed students from secondary schools and colleges across West Yorkshire to an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science event in November 2014. The event, entitled “Enhancing Youth Voice in Schools and Communities” involved the participation of year 9, 10 and 11 students and was designed to encourage greater youth participation in national campaigning and the political decision-making process.

Parallel workshops were held focusing on helping young people to get their messages across through a variety of media techniques, with the young people demonstrating their campaigns to an audience of peers at the afternoon session. Representatives from the Student Union, those involved in student media, and members of academic staff, facilitated the workshops. The event, which featured a keynote address by Dr Andy Mycock, drew on the research strengths of the CRISS team in the fields of youth, citizenship, politics, policy-making and campaigning.
