Constance Omokaro-Romanus, Emerging Markets Research Group (EMERGE)

Constance Omokaro-Romanus, a full time PhD student of International Business Strategy at the University of Huddersfield presented her research on the Internationalization Process of Emerging Market Multinationals (EMNCs): A multidimensional strategic approach to the Emerging Markets Research Group (EMERGE) on 4th November 2014.

Constance came to the University of Huddersfield in 2013, after working as an IT Specialist in The Netherlands for 15 years. She obtained a first class honours degree in Business administration. Afterwards she started her PhD with the support of a Vice Chancellor’s scholarship. She currently focuses on Nigerian multinational companies and their internationalisation process.

Constance says: “The last decades have seen an increase in internationalization from emerging market multinationals (EMNCs) through outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). The internationalization phenomenon, as well as the growing importance of emerging economies, has led to an increase in interest from researchers in the international business discipline.

Research to date has focused mainly on Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC), while other emerging markets (EMs) have been given a minimal attention or neglected in international business research in spite of the fact that Africa has seven of the ten fastest growing economies in the world (The Economist: IMF 2013). The questions remains, how have new EMNCs developed? What are the driving and motivating factors for their internationalization? What are their path, location choice and entry mode strategy when internationalizing? To fill that gap, this research aims to study the multi-dimensional strategic approach of African EMNCs’ internationalization process”.

Professor John Anchor, Director of the Emerging Markets Group added: “The study of EMNCs is at a relatively early stage of development. Therefore, studies are required to provide insight into the development of a broader and more generalizable strategic framework for analyzing the internationalization process.
