The Business School has enjoyed a busy but exciting few weeks filming a video for our industry backed Supply Chain Management undergraduate courses which are sponsored through the NOVUS scheme. The scheme is unique and offers students the chance to be mentored by industry professionals, gain work experience and undertake a placement year with one of a range of major companies such as ASOS, Dixons Retail, Sainsbury’s, DHL, John Lewis, Hermes and many more. The major benefit is that students receive a guaranteed job* on graduation with one of the companies, with a starting salary of a whopping £25K and above!
The weather was kind on the first day of filming on campus and the crew were able to get some fantastic footage of current students talking about their experience of the scheme and how it is benefiting them.
Day two of filming was at the Leeds site of NOVUS scheme member Arla Foods. Arla are the largest UK provider of dairy products, supplying milk to all major supermarkets and produce leading brands such as Cravendale, Anchor butter and Lurpak. The crew filmed some fantastic footage of the dairy in operation, capturing Arla ‘Lean facilitator’ Guy Morris showing Logistics student Mark Keresztes around – Mark will be starting his placement at Arla in July.
Gill Harrison, HR Partner at Arla spoke about the benefits of the scheme and explained:
“The NOVUS scheme is a fantastic idea and we are thrilled to be a part of it and to be working closely with the University of Huddersfield. It allows business and academia to work together to ensure we find and develop young talent who will be ready to enter the Logistics and Supply Chain industry and hit the ground running!”
There was no time to rest as the afternoon session of filming took place at the ASOS logistics site near Barnsley, one of the largest logistics facilities in the UK. Student Lucy Holland (mentored by the Logistics director of ASOS) was filmed on a site tour, learning about the magic that enables customers to order the latest fashion products up until 10pm for next day delivery.
Graduate Naomi Phillips also spoke about how her Logistics & Supply Chain Management degree programme helped prepare her for her current role as a graduate trainee at NOVUS company Clipper, where she works with many clients in the fashion sector to improve their operational performance. Naomi was joined for filming by Clipper Resourcing & Development Manager Peter Charlesworth who commented on how effective mentoring aids the professional development of students.
Andy Kaye, Chair of the NOVUS Trust, explained how the NOVUS partnership between industry and the University of Huddersfield is delivering real benefits to young people; “It's a really exciting scheme that is creating fantastic opportunities for students to study, secure in the knowledge that on graduation they have a guaranteed graduate job in an exciting industry”.
All in all it was a fascinating two days of filming and the crew captured some excellent footage. The video will be ready for release in the next few weeks...watch this space!
