On 8th May 2014, Prince Andrew, HRH The Duke of York paid a visit to Huddersfield to present The Duke of York Young Entrepreneur Awards for 2014 at the University of Huddersfield.

Whilst in town, the Duke visited St Thomas CE Primary School, Bradley, to meet the pupils and learn more about their after-school Code Club. Prince Andrew is patron of the Code Club, a nationwide scheme aimed at teaching children aged 10 and 11 to code.  During his visit, the Duke watched members of the Club in action with the assistance of Chris Brenton and Johnny Miller, undergraduate students from the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield.

Both Johnny and Chris helped to set up the St Thomas' Code Club before Easter and during Prince Andrew's visit, both were on hand to explain what the children were doing and answer questions. Johnny and Chris are both active members of the Huddersfield University Computing Society (HUCS) and are both STEM Ambassadors. We're delighted to report that Johnny and Chris will both be staying with us to undertake PhDs after they graduate this year.

Vice Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan is a former pupil at St Thomas' and helped to set up the very successful visit. The University is also involved with a Code Club in Cleckheaton and hopes to get more students involved through involvement with the Computing at Schools network.
