French students have swapped the busy Parisian boulevards for the rolling Pennines of Huddersfield in a recent visit to the University as part of a Tutor Project that the University has developed in a long standing partnership with the Institut UniversitaireTechnologie (IUT) of Tremblay-en-France.

Eighteen French students in their second year of a Logistics and Transport Management degree took part in an action packed Open Day at the University which entailed a welcome introduction, a tour of the campus and some challenging team building exercises which put their team working, communication and negotiation skills to the ultimate test. The group was led and supported by their English teacher Dr Sandrine Villers who is also a well-known researcher and writer. Dr Villers, having studied at Tulane University, Louisiana (USA) for a period of time, is a strong believer in studying abroad and the benefits it can bring. She, therefore, actively encourages all her students to take part in study opportunities abroad.

Christina Sayegh who is a Senior Lecturer in Logistics at the University of Huddersfield and who organised the event commented: “The day has been extremely successful and all the students have thoroughly enjoyed it. They have learnt something new, been challenged, improved their skills, made friendships and overall had lots of fun. We look forward to welcoming some of the visiting French students again when they join us as full time students in September 2014.”

The University’s own Air Transport and Logistics Management BSc(Hons) students also took part in the event and presented to the group on student life at the University.  “We have all put so much effort into making today successful”, said Hummerra Sheikh who presented on her one year placement at Hellmann Worldwide Logistics in Miami “I have really been able to see the development of my skills especially in terms of presenting and have realised how much my confidence has grown compared to when I first started university.”

Christina added “I am so proud of my students who have helped make the event such a success today; they have developed so much and are now ready to enter the business world as young professionals. I am confident they will do very well and make us proud.”

Overall the French students were very impressed with the University describing it as “amazing”, “beautiful”, “student-focused”, “motivating”, “modern” and “extraordinary”. They also found the Open Day extremely beneficial for finding out more about Huddersfield and what it has to offer, meeting new people, improving their English and the benefits of travelling and studying abroad.

Their teacher, Dr Sandrine Villers, IUT English teacher (pictured on the left) said about the University: “my students and I are very impressed by the infrastructure and the facilities on campus”, she also found the day incredibly beneficial for her students; “there was a great variety of topics taught on the day and both tutors and students at the University delivered them with a great degree of professionalism and enthusiasm.”

The Business School looks forward to welcoming them next year in good old Yorkshire style!
