Politics staff and students collaborate on 'My England?' project

Politics staff and students are working together on a research project that seeks to develop knowledge of how English identity is understood by students and staff on the University of Huddersfield campus.

The survey also seeks to assess attitudes towards England’s future political relationships with other parts of the UK as it gets closer to the Scottish independence referendum.

The project team is led by Dr Andy Mycock and includes Dr Shaun McDaid, and second-year Politics student, Jack McCabe who has designed the survey as part of his work placement.

Jack commented, "debates about Englishness are of interest to staff and students on campus. We believe the survey will offer people the chance to express their views on a number of issues, such as whether they feel English or British and how they view the forthcoming independence referendum in Scotland".

The project team have asked if students and staff who were born in England or who have spent most of their life in England would spare five minutes of their time to complete the online survey. All responses are anonymous and the survey can be accessed here. The questions are straight forward and will help the researchers gain a better understanding of Englishness and England.

The team will present the findings from the survey at the forthcoming first annual St George’s Day Lecture, entitled ‘Towards an independent England?’, to be delivered by Andy Mycock on April 23 2014.
