International Week unites the campus

international week The University's Campus Events team, the International Office and the international student societies came together in early March to host International Week 2014.‌  

The five day programme included 13 separate events featuring culture, sports, film, food and fun. Among the events were some of the University's favourite events: International Food and Culture Festival, International Film Festival, World of Sports tournament and African, Asian and cultural exchange days. The week concluded with a Latin American day which included workshops, music and a World Cup 5-a-side football tournament.

Over 40 international student societies participated in the week hosting events, workshops and film nights with over 2,000 students attending to make the occasion one of the most exciting events of the year.

“You can see the surprise sometimes on the faces of the British students as they hear so many different languages, but we have brought them all together this week and it has been great to see how they have integrated through showcasing cultural exchange activity.

“Whether it was trying on African head-ties, watching Lithuanian films, playing Chinese games, seeing Morris dancing or sampling South American food, the whole campus witnessed a spectacular week of events.

“The international student societies have taken great pride in showcasing their nationalities, preparing activities and working in their kitchens to make food from their own countries.

international week “The University of Huddersfield has a global appeal now and we want to enhance that further by improving the student experience on campus,” commented Alan Tobi, the University's International Marketing Officer. 

We also spoke to some of our students about what they thought of the week and here’s what they had to say:

Samuel Long from the UK who is studying Transport Design said that it was “really great fun to be a part of. Fantastic to see everyone being included and interested in such a range of activities and cultures.”

British computing student Patrick Short commented: "International week was a great chance for me to learn about different countries and cultures and how they differ from my way of life. I got to try lots of tasty delicacies and I watched some great performances from the international student societies." International Week

Business student Halwest Karim from Kurdistan said: "It was an amazing week and the best way to see different cultures, meet people and make friendships. I danced and talked with some nice people and discovered some new things along the way, it was an unforgettable week."
