The Rise of the Super Rat
Fri, 27 Jun 2014 10:47:00 BST
Research on rodenticide resistance rats carried out here at the University of Huddersfield was on the ITV Tonight programme on Thursday 26 June. ‘The Rise of the Super Rat’ featured Dr Dougie Clarke.
The Huddersfield research has also been featured in over 10 regional TV programmes, the national news and numerous radio programmes. Dr Dougie Clarke was also interviewed on the BBC World service.
Genetic tests conducted by the University have shown that rats across many counties of Britain have mutations that allow them to survive commonly available anticoagulant poisons such as bromadiolone and difenacoum.
The results of this valuable research will inform policy makers at government level in October 2014 when they decide on whether to allow the use of stronger rodenticides or to limit the use of anticoagulant rodenticides due to their potential to cause secondary poison to wildlife.
