Adam Murray, a Multimedia Design graduate has been offered a summer placement position with the BBC User Experience and Design (UX&D) team. Adam impressed the BBC UX&D team on his interview by choosing a BBC product that he was passionate about and addressing user needs and concerns.

After spending just under two years at What Creative, a design agency in Leeds, Adam quickly developed an interest in the psychology, interaction and communication that occurred between a product, or service and a user.  He told us “when the opportunity of working for the UX&D department in the BBC arrived, it was difficult to turn this opportunity down. Whilst I did not want to leave What Creative, I saw this as an opportunity to solidify my confidence in User experience design and use this as a springboard for my personal development and future ambitions.”

BBC - Adam Murray Adam, who is now working four days a week at the BBC as a UX&D Intern and one day a week at What Creative, told us “currently I am finding this combination quite surreal due to the difference in environments and styles of project development. It is great being able to have this opportunity and I’m extremely thankful to the guys at What Creative (Huddersfield graduates Chris Skelton and Chris Kemm) for their mentoring and perseverance. They have been the key drivers to where I am today”.

Adam started working at the BBC in June and gave us some insights of his first week with one of the largest broadcasters in the world. “My first week has been entirely about fitting in and getting familiar with the new surroundings. I’ve been meeting a variety of people from Creative Directors in London to front-end developers in Glasgow. It’s been interesting but with the experience of a smaller agency, I’m itching to get my teeth into a project. I’ve been researching the core principles, accessibility guidelines and trying to grasp an understanding of new words/lingo I am hearing around the offices”.

Adam’s plans for the near future are to focus on furthering his education in the realms of User Experience with an introduction to psychology whilst also working on improving his skills in code and design. He told us “I have a strong desire to help and I thoroughly believe that technology and innovation can drastically improve who we are and how we develop. In the long-term, I’d like to see myself developing solutions to common problems faced in our daily lives, whether this falls under health, personal development, education or political agenda. At the moment, I am really enjoying how it feels great to have a foot on the first step of a very high ladder”.
