Primary Education course leader Jonathan Glazzard arranged a special session for our primary teacher trainers with ex-teacher Hywel Roberts. Drama teacher, author and educationalist, Hywel gave a motivational talk aimed at helping future teachers keep focused on what’s really important about becoming a teacher.

Jonathan organised the event to help the trainees

-       Be inspired

-       Learn how to get children obsessed with learning

-       Remember why they want to teach

Hywel was a senior leader and Advanced Skills Teacher at a secondary school in the north of England until 2009. He works with a number of universities and is a member of the National Executive for the National Association for the Teaching of Drama.

He delivers teacher coaching, leadership development, and innovative strategies and a whole variety of approaches to make learning real for young people. He is known for delivering his work with energy and an infectious humour, in which he proposes classroom strategies that enable young children to learn, to think, to participate, to take responsibility and enjoy the whole process.

He has also authored a book for children’s learning entitled ‘Oops! Helping children learn accidentally’. Details about the author and the book can be found on his website http://www.createlearninspire.co.uk.

Students who attended gave their feedback. Below are a few of their comments:

“I felt that the session opened my eyes to some of the tips teachers can use in the classroom to really hook children in but which didn’t seem to be talked about in the literature (the advice today was so much more practical). It was also great to see how al the advice was delivered with so much enthusiasm and humour as these kinds of qualities can so often be missing from primary school practitioners in an Ofsted-pressured environment.”

“Approach to ethos and values of school explained well and issues addressed within schools and education – well informed and a pleasure to learn from.”

“Inspiring, engaging, reminded me why I want to teach, lots of things I can take away with me and research further.”

“It was brilliant. It reminded me that although it is easy to get caught up in paperwork/pressure/data, the reason we teach is the children. Fab, please bring him back!”

“Amazingly passionate. Reminded me why I love children and teaching. Sent me off with great ideas and a smile on my face. Thank you!”
