Warmer than average but second wettest

May was another warmer than average month, however, it was the second wettest May since our records began.  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences Weather Station.      

The monthly mean temperature was 12.9˚C compared to the average for May of 12.45˚C making it the warmest May since 2008 and the seventh warmest May since our records began.  The warmest day of the month was Sunday 18th with an average temperature of 18.3˚C.  The maximum temperature of 25.3˚C was recorded on Monday 19th.  The coldest day of the month was Friday 2nd with an average temperature of 7.6˚C; the lowest minimum temperature of 1.3˚C was also recorded on this day.

It was our second wettest May since our records began with a total of 117.8mm (average 54.1mm); May 2006 was slightly wetter with 120mm.  The wettest day of the month was Saturday 10th with 17mm of rain (14.4% of the month’s total rainfall).  Ten days of the month escaped without any rainfall, the driest spell falling between Wednesday 14th and Monday 19th inclusive. 

The mean wind speed for the month was 12.42km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 27.36km/hr recorded on Wednesday 28th.  The highest gust of wind for the whole month was 87.84km/hr recorded on Friday 9th.

The prevailing wind direction was south west.
