The Huddersfield Giants came along to the University last week to undergo shoulder strength testing using the Exercise Science course’s state-of-the-art equipment.
The Exercise Science BSc(Hons) course is proud to be involved with the Huddersfield Giants. The Giants go through a range of regular fitness tests to ensure they are at peak physical condition and to hopefully prevent any injuries.
Last week, the Giant’s came to campus to look at shoulder strength, specifically concentric and eccentric isokinetic contractions. When a rugby player tackles another player, there is a huge amount of strain put on the shoulders and as a result, there is a high level of shoulder injuries across the super league.
Measuring shoulder strength in this way may highlight players who need to focus on should strengthening exercises in order to prevent future injury. It can also measure how quickly a player is recovering from injury and let the coaches know if they are fit to return to action.
This access to elite ruby players is a huge bonus for the Exercise Science students, as it demonstrates real-life application from the theory they learn on the course to practice situations.
