The members of the Huddersfield Marathon Band are finalists in this year’s JustGiving Awards.  There were over 2,500 nominations and they were successful in reaching the last three in their category, ‘Creative Fundraiser of the Year,’ which is a great achievement.

To help them to be in with a chance of winning the award they need people to vote for them, which can be done online here: http://www.justgiving.com/en/justgiving-awards-2014

Huddersfield Marathon Band

In 2011 the University of Huddersfield Marathon Band was created. Their aim was to set the record for ‘fastest marathon by a marching band’ and make in excess of £30,000 for the charity Sense. The 2011 band was founded and created by Mike Lomas and consisted of 19 Students at the University of Huddersfield and one lecturer, Phillip McCann. They achieved what they set out to achieve and more, setting the Guinness World Record for ‘the fastest marathon by a marching band’ and raising in excess of £37,500 for charity on this attempt.

However, in 2012 a band based in Germany took on their challenge and claimed the Guinness World Record. This only spurred on the Huddersfield Marathon Band to come back and try again.

In 2014 they opened their doors to people across the UK to join the amazing adventures of the band and were renamed the Huddersfield Marathon Band. This massively boosted their public profile and encouraged many different ways in donating. The band completed the Virgin London Marathon this year in 6 hours 56 minutes 44 seconds and reclaimed the Guinness World record.  They also raised in excess of £68,000 for the charity, bringing the total to well over £100,000.

Voting closes on Saturday 23 August.  The band will find out if they have won at an award ceremony on Thursday 25 September.
