On June 18 2014, the Human and Health Science’s Postgraduate Research (PGR) Forum hosted their inaugural conference at the University of Huddersfield entitled: 'Citizenship in the 21st Century: Sociological, Political and Cultural Perspectives'. The conference, for which the PGR Forum had gained £1,000 in funding from The British Sociological Association, had delegates visiting the University from as far away as the USA, Germany and the Republic of Ireland, as well as various locations throughout the UK.
The event consisted of four panels chaired by School of Human and Health Sciences academics including Race and Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality; Communication, Democracy and Recognition, Disability and Health. There were three keynote addresses given by leading scholars working within the field of citizenship. These were Dr Nick Stevenson of the University of Nottingham, Dr Darren Langdridge of the Open University, and the University of Huddersfield’s Head of Department of Behavioural and Social Sciences, Dr Chris Gifford.
The event was organised by research students Vicky Byrne, Camilo Tamayo Gómez, Danielle Cutler, Gavin Hart, Libby McEnhill, and Rebecca Murray. The great success of the day was evidenced by the high quality of presentations, lively conversations, and a supportive atmosphere. To further this success, the PGR Forum intends to publish a themed volume from the conference proceedings.
