In just over a week it will be the Students’ Union’s Student Volunteering Week. Running from 24 February until 1 March, the week sees all manner of events taking place, from a bus tour of some local organisations you can volunteer with, to a film night to recruit volunteer zombies for the Huddersfield Round Table ‘State of Decay’ zombie 5k run in Beaumont Park, and ‘Throwback Thursday’ – a vintage tea party and celebration of all things retro in aid of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation – there’s even got a Space Invaders machine and Twister!
The Students’ Union will also be showcasing some of the fantastic student-led projects that you’ve been working on, such as the HarvestHud allotment project, which grows fresh produce and collects dry goods for The Welcome Centre food bank, and Knitter Natter, a new befriending and knitting group in partnership with Age UK.
The culmination of the week is the massive ‘Students at the heart of Hud’ event on Saturday 1 March. The aim is for at least 100 of you to volunteer for 5 different projects across Kirklees, from painting the Options Centre in Dewsbury, to supporting the Oxfam online shop in Batley, and clearing a churchyard in Kirkheaton.
So what are you waiting for? Try something new and get your hands dirty making life better for people across Huddersfield and beyond. You can find out more at www.huddersfield.su/volunteeringweek where you can sign up to all the events and ‘change your life by changing someone else’s’.
