It’s the start of the New Year and what better way to begin it than to do a good deed and set a new challenge! Well, that is exactly what the newly formed Huddersfield Marathon Band will be doing. They will be marching on in the 2014 Virgin London Marathon to help raise in excess of £60,000 for the charity Sense, the UK deaf Blind Charity. The band has grown in size from previous years with 33 members, 10 of which are from the University of Huddersfield. A Business Studies student from the University, Mike Lomas will be leading the band to success. Congratulations also to Mike who has been recently awarded the BBC Star award for his charity work in leading the Huddersfield Band.

Mike comments: “I am very excited to be leading this great team again and I am hoping we can make a lot of money for Sense, the UK deaf Blind Charity! I am very honoured to have won the BBC star award and would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the band over the time it has been going!”

It is not the first time that the Band has marched in a marathon. In 2011 they became the first ever marching band to complete the Virgin London Marathon and raised an impressive amount of money, in excess of £30,000 for the same charity. They also obtained a place in the Guinness World records for the “fastest marching band to complete a marathon”. A fantastic achievement! Unfortunately, the title was taken from them in 2012 by a band in Germany. This has not deterred the band and they are more than ready for the challenge of re-gaining their title whilst doing a good deed for charity.

The band is also being supported by our very own Chancellor, Sir Patrick Stewart who Tweeted: Patrick Stewart‏ @SirPatStew 14/02/2014: -

“I'm supporting @HudMaraBand2014 running London Marathon for the charity "Sense". http://www.hmb2014.com for info”
