The newly created Childhud Studies Society has been able to attract international speaker and creator of Storysacks to the University. The founders, Stevie and Katie, managed to get Neil Griffiths, the inventor or Storysacks to speak at one of their meetings.

As the Childhood Studies BA(Hons) course leader, Ceri Daniels, says, ‘Stevie and Katie did incredibly well to secure an international speaker of Neil Griffiths’ standing as he travels all over the world from Africa to Iceland giving talks on reading with children and young people and the power of Storysacks. He actually commented afterwards that his experience at the School of Education and Professional Development here at Huddersfield was brilliant and he would love to return next year!

His talk was thought provoking and inspiring because it got to the heart of how people working with children have a unique and privileged opportunity to stimulate the joys of learning through the world of books and reading. I feel it will have left a very powerful message with our students about how they can instil a love of storytelling and reading in children when they work with them in the future. He was incredibly funny and engaging, yet at the same time moved people in the room with his passion for Storysacks as a method of bringing stories to life that engage and fully involve the children.’

Students on the course study a module which involves developing their own story sacks so the visit was relevant and motivating. The event was well attended and bodes well for the future development of this exciting society.

Details of the story also appeared on the Students’ Union web pages.
