London Fashion Week kicked off this week, and topping the bill was Burberry Prorsum’s Womenswear show. The runway show showcased the influential brand’s upcoming collection, an exciting event in the fashion calendar, but one which is especially significant for 10 fashion students from the University of Huddersfield. They were the lucky recipients of tickets to the exclusive show and rubbed shoulders with celebrities, fashion critics and bloggers in getting a first look at the new collection produced by the iconic brand, it’s Creative Director Christopher Bailey and his team of skilled designers.Behind the scenes as Look North film in the fashion studios

The University of Huddersfield enjoys a close relationship with Burberry and Christopher Bailey, who is an Honourary Doctor at the University and a West Yorkshire native. This gives the University’s students amazing personal insight to the design and promotion of products from a brand that is not only incredibly influential in creative terms, but also commercially successful around the World. The opportunity for students to gain real-world insight is something that the University of Huddersfield’s fashion department is very proud of. Stephen Wigley, Subject Leader for Fashion, explains that “Burberry is just one of the companies we have a great relationship with and who benefit our students with access to their activities, or by having student work on live projects, or by hosting students on work placement. These companies include major international brands from around the World, but also smaller, locally based organisations which altogether represent the diversity of opportunities available to our students as they study with us and graduate to enter the industry”.

Stephen Wigley, Subject Leader for Fashion, being interviewed on Look North Historically, Huddersfield has been at the very heart of the British and International fashion and textile industry with the success of the University’s Fashion and Textile courses and students underlining the continuing relevance of fashion design, manufacture, marketing and management to the local and British economy. The lucky students who enjoyed an exclusive first look at Burberry Prorsum’s new collection are just 10 of the many at the University of Huddersfield who are looking forward to a rewarding and exciting career in the fashion industry.
