The Emerging Markets Research Group was pleased to welcome Dr Ainur Abdrazakova, of Turar Ryskulov Kazakh Economic University in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 18 February.
Dr. Abdrazakova is currently doing her post-doctoral studies in the University of Huddersfield Business School under the supervision of Dr John Anchor, Director of the School’s Emerging Markets Research Group (EMERGE), as part of the Central Asian Network in Economics and Management (CANEM), which is funded by the European Union’s Erasmus Mundus programme.
Dr Abdrazakova presented an element of her ongoing research into the development of higher education in Kazakhstan. Her main focus was on the reforms which have been implemented in Kazakh higher education since 1991, when the Soviet Union was dissolved.
Dr Abdrazakova explains “Higher education in Kazakhstan is facing opportunities and challenges as the country grows in importance in the international arena. Although in the first decade of transition from the former Soviet Union, the educational system of the country suffered considerable dislocation, since 2000 great efforts have been made to modernize higher education in the Republic of Kazakhstan. For example, Kazakhstan has entered the Bologna process and the government has prioritized the international accreditation of universities, institutional capacity building, and greater access to tertiary education in an attempt to overcome regional inequalities.”
Dr. John Anchor, Director of the Emerging Markets Research Group says: “Dr Abdrazakova gave a fascinating and detailed account of the development of higher education in Kazakhstan. Higher education is seen a vital resource for the country’s future development, serving as a supplier of human and intellectual capital, as well as an engine of economic development.” He added, “The Emerging Markets Research Group is looking forward to further co-operation in research, within the CANEM project, with colleagues from Kazakhstan and the four other countries of Central Asia.”
