He previously held the chair of Sociology at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia (1990-93) and taught sociology at the University of Exeter (1967-90). He holds doctorates from the Universities of Amsterdam and Cambridge, and is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, of the Academic Europaea, and of the Royal Irish Academy.
