The Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (LFHE) has just published the findings of a project that examined “the role and effectiveness of audit committees in UK Higher Education Institutions” conducted by Director of FEGReG, Professor Collins Ntim and his colleagues (Dr Teerooven Soobaroyen and Dr Martin Broad) at Southampton Business School, University of Southampton.

The project, which was funded by the LFHE, combines sector-wide econometric analyses of annual report contents with in-depth case studies involving observations and interviews with key institutional managers, including finance directors, audit committee chairpersons and audit committee members. The findings indicate that a majority of UK higher education institutions’ audit committees are well composed, but the volume and scope of the remit and work of audit committees are rapidly expanding with risk management increasingly dominating the agenda and discussions of a typical audit committee meeting. The report makes far-reaching recommendations that are aimed at further enhancing the role and effectiveness of audit committees in UK higher education institutions in an era of increased austerity and reform.
