Mild, but misty

Misty, damp day THE weather in November followed the theme of October; very mild conditions for the time of year, average rainfall, but only seven days of the month free from rainfall.  Looking at the UK weather conditions as a whole the average temperature for the month was 7.6˚C, which is 1.4˚C above the 1981-2010 long-term average.  This has made it the fifth warmest November for the UK in a series from 1910 (Met Office).  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences weather station.

The monthly mean temperature was 8.63˚C almost a degree higher than the average temperature for November of 7.64˚C making it the fourth warmest November since our records began.  The warmest day of the month was Saturday 1st with an average temperature of 14.1˚C; the highest maximum temperature of 15.3˚C was also recorded on this day.  The coldest days of the month, both with an average temperature of 4.8˚C, were Wednesday 5th and Monday 24th.  The lowest minimum temperature of -0.1˚C was recorded on Wednesday 5th.  The temperature fell below zero on just one day of the month.

Horsechest nut A total of 69.2mm was recorded during the month just slightly below the average for November of 74.1mm.  The wettest day of the month was Friday 21st with 16.8mm of rainfall (24.3% of the month’s total).  Just seven days of the month escaped rainfall, the driest spell fell between Tuesday 18th and Thursday 20th inclusive.

The mean wind speed for the month was 7.27km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 34.56km/hr recorded on Saturday 8th.  The highest gust of wind for the month was 72.36km/hr recorded on Monday 17th.

The prevailing wind direction for the month was southwest.
