Business Management undergraduate Philippa Bean is the first ever Chartered Management Institute student ambassador.

The CMI is an accredited professional institution for management based in the United Kingdom. When Philippa heard that they were recruiting student ambassadors, she applied, passed the interview stage and became the first ever to hold the position.

“I hope that more people end up signing up for the CMI qualification. It’s such a good thing to have. It’s an internationally accredited qualification and it’s included in the coursework that we’re already doing.”

“The CMI library is based on real world experience and real businesses. For younger students, it gives them a bit of an insight into the world of work, what all the big shots are doing and how they’re doing it.”

Philippa is in the second year of her Business and Human Resource Management degree. We asked her what she enjoys the most about her course.

“No two days are ever going to be the same because you’re always dealing with different people. I like diversity and lots of change, and I like a challenge and the way the law changes so much in HR.”

Philippa feels that as a mature student, her experience gives her a better context for absorbing the theory she is learning now.

“I’m learning the theory that explains why I used to make the decisions I made.  I can put it into a real world context for the rest of the class who don’t have work experience, so everybody benefits. They’re teaching me how to use PowerPoint, how to study or how to write an essay and I help them with my experience and the practical elements.”

After graduating, Philippa wants to become a university lecturer in HR. Passionate about helping people and already known as the “mum of the class”, we think she’ll do a great job.

“I want to inspire others and I think I’ve got a lot of experience to bring to the table rather than just the theory. I just want the chance to be able to nurture individuals and be as inspiring as some of my tutors.”
