‘Be Innovative!’ is an electronic engineering and design themed educational challenge created by the British Council in China in partnership with six universities, including the University of Huddersfield. Additional partners include the National Institute of Education Sciences and a media partner YouKu.com.

Be Innovative gives Chinese students a chance to experience the innovative and exciting nature of UK education, promote the UK as a top study destination, and demonstrates the academic and research excellence of UK universities, via nurturing strategic partnerships, with Chinese schools and universities.

Teams were asked to develop a project for an item that tackles the fundamental issue of supporting people's wellbeing, by introducing improved and innovative elements of electronic engineering and design to everyday living.

Dr Violeta Holmes, Subject Area Leader for Electronic Engineering, was one of the staff supporting teams during the competition, and judged the 2014 Be Innovative challenge.

During her visit to Guandong Experimental High School and Chengdu No. 7 Middle School, Dr Holmes delivered a presentation about innovative and inspiring teaching and courses at the University of Huddersfield. Dr Holmes also took part in the cultural exchange activities, and enjoyed sampling traditional Chinese Opera costumes.

The final was streamed online to millions of Chinese viewers. The winning teams were Tianjin Foreign Language Middle School, and the South University of Science and Technology, China. They will be visiting UK universities in 2015 as their prize.

Dr Holmes says “we are looking forward to welcoming the winning teams to the University of Huddersfield in 2015 and sharing our teaching and learning experiences in Electronic Engineering.”
