The Head of the Department of Engineering and Technology, Professor Ian Glover, has been elected to the Chair of the UK Panel of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI). His three-year term of office will follow the URSI General Assembly and Scientific Symposium (GASS) which is being held in Beijing from 18th to 23rd August 2014.
URSI (Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale) was created in 1919 growing out of the earlier Commission Internationale de Telegraphie sans Fil. It operates under the umbrella of the International Council for Science, encouraging and coordinating international research across all areas of science and technology in which electromagnetic radiation plays an important role.
The General Assembly is combined with a triennial Scientific Symposium at which Professor Glover will be presenting recent work of his research team into the use of partial discharge radiation to monitor insulation integrity in power systems.
Professor Glover has served URSI in several capacities in the past as a representative for both Commission F and Commission E and as an associate editor of URSI’s quarterly journal ‘Radio Science Bulletin’. Since the 2011 GASS (held in Istanbul) he has been the secretary of the UK Panel. The URSI UK Panel is a formally constituted committee of the Royal Society and runs the annual UK Festival of Radio Science (FRSci). Professor Glover is chairing the 2014 UK FRSci which takes place on 16th December at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics.
