Malaysian Alumni Society launched at reunion in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysian graduates celebrated their time at the University of Huddersfield in the UK as the institution launched its Alumni Society with former students from across the country.

Students spanning two generations came together to meet old friends, share experiences and remember their time at Huddersfield.

The launch event, held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, celebrated the success of Huddersfield’s Malaysian students who have gone on to careers in a wide range of disciplines, both in Malaysia and overseas.  Around 50 guests attended the event which spanned a whole generation.

Professor Erry Yulian T. Adesta (Deputy Dean at the International Islamic University Malaysia Professor Erry Yulian T. Adesta, Deputy Dean (Postgraduate and Research) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (pictured right), was one of the alumni who attended the event and he remembers fondly his time at the institution.

“Huddersfield is a place where you find not only a vibrant, high quality learning environment, but also Yorkshire culture, society and heritage to relish,” said Professor Adesta.  “Blending them together will give you an unforgettable and memorable experience you will not find anywhere else in Britain.”

Professor David Taylor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, International, at the University of Huddersfield, was delighted that so many of the Malaysian graduates, having gained their education at Huddersfield, were now making important contributions to both the social and economic development of their home country.

“I was particularly pleased to hear about the broad range of successful careers that our graduates have carved out for themselves both in Malaysia and around the world,” said Professor Taylor.

“The University of Huddersfield has formed many international partnerships and was awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade earlier this year.  We hope that we can build on this success and continue to work closely with our Malaysian partners.”

The University currently has 3,000 overseas students from more than 120 countries and has recently been awarded the prestigious University of the Year Award by the Times Higher Education magazine in the UK.

The University is now planning further overseas alumni reunion events.  The next one will take place in Jordan in May.
