Spring is in the air

There was definitely a touch of spring to the month.  March 2014 was 5.6˚C warmer than March last year with the temperatures falling below zero on just two days of the month.  The temperature has only fallen below zero on seven days so far this year!  The average figures are those recorded since 1990 from the School of Applied Sciences Weather Station.

The monthly mean temperature was 7.98˚C (average 7.05˚C) making it the 7th warmest March since our records began.  The warmest day of the month was Saturday 8th with an average temperature of 11.5˚C.  The maximum temperature recorded during the month was 18.9˚C on Thursday 13th, making it the third equal warmest temperature recorded in March since records began.  The coldest day of the month was Sunday 23rd with an average temperature of 4.5˚C, the lowest minimum temperature of -1.4˚C was also recorded on this day.  The temperature fell below zero on just two days of the month.

It was the eighth wettest March since our records began with a recorded rainfall of 81.4mm compared to the average figure of 59.14mm.  31.4mm of rain was recorded on Thursday 27th making it the wettest day recorded in March since our records began (38.6% of the months total).  Fifteen days of the month escaped rainfall, the driest spells falling between Saturday 8th and Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th and Sunday 16th inclusive.

The mean wind speed for the month was 13.25km/hr.  The highest mean wind speed was 27.72km/hr recorded on Wednesday 19th.  The highest gust of wind for the whole month was 99km/hr recorded on Sunday 16th.

The prevailing wind direction for the month was south west.
