A team of students from Heckmondwike Grammar School have won the Huddersfield Heat of a Royal Society of Chemistry quiz competition.

The annual Top of the Bench competition, hosted by the University of Huddersfield’s School of Applied Sciences, pits teams of four students against each other over a number of rounds. This year’s quiz saw fifteen teams taking part, representing nine schools from Kirklees, Calderdale and Wakefield. Each team includes two students from year 9 and one each from years 10 and 11.

The teams faced questions on subjects including chemical elements, the chemistry of food, lab safety and crystallography, posed by Dr Jeremy Hopwood and Claire Boakes from the University and Steve Turner, Secretary of the Huddersfield Section of the RSC.

After six rounds, Heckmondwike were level on points with North Halifax Grammar, last year’s winning team, and it took two tie-break questions to separate the teams.

Heckmondwike’s winning team of Jamie Stirling, Basim Khajwal, Jessica Carter and Oliver Atkinson now go forward to the national final of the competition, which will be held in London in the new year.
