Outstanding LD Nursing students nominated for awards Two second year students on the Nursing (Learning Disability) BSc(Hons) course at Huddersfield have certainly been making the most of their time here, gaining recognition at national level for their  commitment to learning and promise in the field of Learning Disability Nursing.

After receiving coveted nominations for the Nursing Times Learning Disability Student of the Year award, Ian Stevenson and Becci Haydock [pictured left] have now been selected for a prestigious leadership coaching course as part of the Positive Choices ‘Strengthening the Commitment’ national initiative.

The initiative involves a leadership event, allowing senior student nurses to work with practice partners to explore ways in which to support and nurture emerging leadership within learning disability nursing. Following the workshop, each participating student will be allocated a ‘coach’ who will offer valuable mentorship throughout the beginning of their career. Two of only 30 students selected nationwide for the initiative; Ian and Becci will be recognised as promising new leaders in the field and will be best placed to start their exciting new careers.

Earlier this year, Ian and Becci also attended the Student Times Nursing Awards in London, as nominees in the category of Learning Disability Nursing Student of the year. With only four finalists selected nationally in each category, their nominations once again highlight Ian and Becci as truly outstanding students in the field. Speaking about the nominations, Ian said ‘it’s a real confidence boost. I think the achievement reflects all the hard work of the last few years – it doesn’t look bad on the CV either!’

Both Ian and Becci acknowledged the support they have received from staff on the Learning Disability Nursing course, and cited the variety of placement opportunities available as a major factor in helping to clarify future career aspirations. Becci now hopes to pursue a nursing role in children’s hospice care, having completed a 12 week placement at the Kirkwood Hospice; whilst Ian’s interests lie in the forensic side of learning disability nursing, centring around community work and balancing the multiple needs of offenders with a learning disability.

Whichever career they choose, you can bet that these two outstanding students have a bright future ahead.

You can see Becci talking more about her experience on the Learning Disability degree course here.
