Working as a Research Fellow at the EPSRC Centre is very rewarding and no two days are the same. Here’s an idea of what a typical week can be like:
Industrial Collaboration
- Discussions with a Lancashire-based company on modelling machine tools
- Meeting a Yorkshire-based SME for a Knowledge Transfer Partnership project
- Working on a computational geometry problem for a local SME
- Project review meeting with a large multinational company for a research project looking at state-of-the-art machine tool calibration practices
- Processing 3D cloud point data from a FARO Focus3d laser scanner for 3D documentation of a production facility for a local company.
European research projects
- Reviewing and developing Marie Curie Fellowship applications
- In-depth testing of a structural monitoring module for the HARCO Framework 7 European Project
- Final preparations of a new Framework 7 European Project, due to begin this autumn.
Expertise
- Attending the British Standards Institute Committee MTE/001/02 Machine tools – Accuracy meeting at the Manufacturing Technologies Association Headquarters in London
- Review of standards for the International Organization for Standardization ISO/TC 39/SC 2 - Test conditions for metal cutting machine tools in preparation for an upcoming meeting in Washington, USA
- Preparing papers for the NewTech 2013 conference in Sweden
PhD work
- Celebrating World Metrology Day with PhD metrology students
- Providing guidance and advice for a number of postgraduate students
And last but not least welcoming HRH Duke of York to the new EPSRC Centre laboratories during the opening of the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre. Perhaps not a usual occurrence but you can see that life as a researcher at the EPSRC Centre is certainly a very varied one.
