A Cyber Bullying Mentor Group set up by Huddersfield law students has been pioneering a presentation tackling issues of cyber-bullying in local schools and colleges. The group established the ‘Street Law’ project in September 2012 and is going from strength to strength. The project was the brainchild of law students Mazambal Mahboob, Aysha Matloob, Ayesha Saeed, Faizal Lunat, Shamaila Gul, Katy Smith and Jaynie Broughton. Jaynie describes how the project came together:
“We chose cyber bullying as our topic as it is something that with more knowledge and understanding of the subject would be positive and beneficial to the community. It is also something that would be interesting to research and a current issue within the media.
“We then pitched our idea amongst the other groups through a presentation to the year one students. They then voted which group they thought they would most like to work with. We decided that the most beneficial audience would be year 9 pupils within local schools as that is the age that children seem to become more independent online.
“At meetings everyone was given a role to put the presentation together. The year one students decided the most powerful and engaging way would be through a role play of a cyber-bullying situation followed by an interactive power point. Following numerous meetings and practices we came up with the final product and were ready to find a school to present to.
“We got in touch with Leeds Grammar school and had a meeting with the head of year 9. We explained the aim of our presentation and what it entailed and she agreed and gave us two dates to present in June.
“The mentees presented to the year 9 students and did a fantastic job! The role play definitely kept them engaged and it was powerful enough to portray the message that victims of cyber bullying are not alone. They also provided points of contact for victims that were too afraid to speak out.”
The project has received such a great response so that the Street Law team are rolling out the presentation to other colleges in the region.
