Emily Halstead, an Accountancy and Finance student at The University of Huddersfield has beat off 19 other placement students to win a placement bursary award of £1500 from Cummins Power Generation in Kent where she is currently on a placement year as a Power Systems Accounts Advisor.

The competition consisted of a testimony from Emily’s direct manager and a 15 minute presentation covering performance and contribution over the year, communication skills, innovation and continuous improvement and community involvement (CIT) to name a few. The presentations were assessed and judged by a panel of departmental directors and senior management at Cummins.

Emily said about winning; “I feel as though this is my greatest achievement in life so far, money aside, this has given me the recognition that I need within the company. I cannot describe how much this award really means to me. My manager has already stated that he would like me back in a graduate role but now, with this behind me, it will give grounds to top management that they should invest more time in me and open up a new role.”

Not only did Emily impress the judges with her presentation, high standard of work and continuous commitment in order to be selected as winner of one of the four bursary awards on offer, she was also ranked number one placement student. A fantastic achievement!

Emily said about her future plans:

“I am now looking forward to my final year, whereby, I now feel like I have the determination, added skills such as presenting and a more structured way of working. I have had such a valuable year, the transformation when I first came, to now, is vast. After university, I would love to come back to Cummins.  I have such a supportive team behind me and my development is continuous here. My dream would to become a director at Cummins, I have a special interest in the generator market too now that I have learnt so much about it.”

Well done Emily, we wish you all the very best in your final year at university and in your future career.
