Ace of Cakes Alison Whitmarsh Enterprising Huddersfield graduate Allison Whitmarsh secured herself a £50,000 investment from Dragon’s Den panellist Deborah Meaden after her traditional cakes ‘with a twist’ caused a stir.

Allison, a former dinner lady who graduated from the University after studying Hospitality Management, started baking cakes for friends and family as a way to earn extra money whilst studying. As the demand for Allison’s cakes grew so did the idea to make this money spinner into a small business and so ProperMaid was born.

Securing funding from The Enterprise Team’s start-up funds and attending a Graduate Entrepreneurship Boot Camp helped Allison shape her business. Only two months after graduating and after only a year of trading Allison had grown sufficiently to require four part-time employees and move to new premises with a bakery and a shop to sell her delicious cakes.

Allison said of The Enterprise Team “I am always conscious and proud of the fact that The Enterprise Team was always so supportive in my early stages, but what I have been most impressed with is that the support has continued long after I completed my studies at the University of Huddersfield; for that I am extremely grateful”
