MP Jason McCartney visits the Institute of Railway Research
Jason McCartney MP visited the University recently at the invitation of the VC to see the new Institute of Railway Research (IRR). Mr. McCartney was shown around the Institute by Professor Simon Iwnicki who explained that funding for the work being undertaken came from many railway companies as well as European funding for several large research projects.

Mr. McCartney is vice chairman of the parliamentary ‘Rail in the North’ group and is active in promoting the extension of HS2. He was very interested in the techniques being developed at the University and Paul Molyneux-Berry of the IRR demonstrated the methods that he was using to improve understanding of the different mechanisms that caused wheel damage and how this was being used to optimise maintenance procedures on the Trans-Pennine trains.

After the visit Mr. McCartney posted a tweet saying that he was impressed by what he had seen and that ‘rail is the future’!
