Report looks at how telephonic contact can be a supportive intervention in order to facilitate a return to work

Great Britain loses around 140 million working days due to sickness absence every year, which results in an estimate cost of nine billion pounds to employers, four billion pounds to individuals and two billion pounds the Government. Almost half of the total number of working days lost are due to long-term sickness absences of four weeks or longer.

In order to identify obstacles preventing a return to work, a project was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions to assess support, steps and intervention opportunities to facilitate a return to work.

The project was lead by Profession Kim Burton along with co-author by Dr Serena McCluskey and the final report, 'Telephonic support to facilitate return to work: what works, how, and when?' will directly inform the Government's Health at Work Policy.
