JUST a week after Huddersfield’s Festival of Light, the town’s University switched on a light show of its own.

Its new £22.5 million building, Student Central, has actually been completed ahead of schedule.  The original plan was for the building – adjacent to Wakefield Road, opposite Sainsbury’s – to be open for business by Easter 2014.

However, despite the fact that the Student Central was probably the most ambitious building project yet on the University of Huddersfield’s campus, progress was so good that it has been possible to make it ready for January, when returning students will be able to enjoy hugely improved sports, recreation, support and catering facilities.

In this video are the lights of the University of Huddersfield's new illuminated Student Central building being turned on.

A distinctive feature of the building is the incorporation of LED lights that can be lit in a range of hues.  And in a year that the Huddersfield Giants topped the Super League, the club’s famous claret and gold was an obvious choice.

Coach Paul Anderson and star-player Eorl Crabtree were enlisted to switch on the lights during a Christmas celebration hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan.

The University has also had plenty to celebrate this year, not least being declared the University of the Year, winning two Queen’s Awards and with the opening of the new 3M Buckley Innovation Centre.

But Professor Cryan has pledged that the University will not be resting on its laurels. And the new Student Central building is a concrete example of this refusal to be complacent.

Said Professor Cryan: “In an increasingly competitive university market, the factor known as the ‘student experience’ is now more important than ever.  The University’s new Student Central building will help us to ensure that Huddersfield remains a university of choice.”
