Our Skills for Logistics “Made in China” competition got off to a flying start with a number of college and sixth form students battling it out to win a fantastic £500 cash prize which was kindly donated by one of our NOVUS company sponsors Lloyd Fraser. The day was led by Jayne Hemmingham, Lecturer in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Students from Morley Academy, Boston Spa sixth form and Ashton sixth form took on various Logistic Managerial roles in an attempt to win a mock business tender from a large electrical manufacturer. They then had to present their business ideas to a panel of judges led by Jayne Hemmingham, Louise Christie, Implementation Specialist from Skills for Logistics and two final year Logistics students Sara Abdelfattah and Mushud Haq who are currently studying at the University.

The competition was extremely high but the victors were Morley Academy. Jayne commented: “The competition was so close and the standard from each group who presented was excellent. Everybody has done very well and I am impressed by the calibre of each group I have seen today. Morley Academy presented their tender extremely well and was the closest in terms of making a profitable business proposition.”

The students from Morley Academy were thrilled to receive their trophy and cheque for £500. One student commented: “I can’t believe we have won, it’s great! It was pretty tough going and nerve wracking as I am not used to giving presentations. It has given me some good experience and a view of how Logistics works in business and I’ve also got to see what university life is like too. I know now that I definitely want to go to university.”

The competition was organised to introduce college and sixth form students to Logistics and raise awareness of the important and fundamental part it plays within all business. It also highlighted the many opportunities available to young people who enter into a career in Logistics especially through the NOVUS scheme which offers mentoring, working experience and a guaranteed graduate job to students on the scheme. The NOVUS scheme is a unique partnership between the University of Huddersfield and leading organisations such as ASOS, Dixons Retail, Sainsburys, DHL, Hermes and more.

Due to the success of the competition, the Business School aims to hold further Logistics Focus Days. Dates will be announced shortly. If you are a school or college interested in attending one, please contact BusinessSchoolEnquiries@hud.ac.uk for more information.
