A level student's research helping the manufacturing industry

This summer the EPSRC Centre joined forces with the Nuffield Foundation to give a local A level student the opportunity to work on a research project during his summer holidays.

Haseeb Haleem, an A level student at Grange Technology Collage, Bradford studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, has just completed his four week Nuffield Research Placement at the University of Huddersfield’s EPSRC Centre investigating the effect of barrelling on brass and understanding what changes take place within the metal and why this reduces wear.

“It’s been a really interesting project. I’ve learnt a lot, done various tests and being part of this team has shown me the fundamentals of engineering research and how small changes can bring about unexpected results.” commented Haseeb who wants to study engineering at university.

“I’ve always wanted to know why and how things work. Engineering not only helps you fix things, it helps to broaden your mind integrating other subjects like physics, chemistry and maths which builds deep understanding in the functionality of systems.”

Haseeb was supervised by Dr Leigh Fleming, Senior Lecturer and supported by Chris Dawson, Metrology Applications Engineer for the EPSRC Centre.

Dr Fleming said: “Haseeb has been a pleasure to work with. He’s very inquisitive which is just what a researcher needs to be. The work that he has done will bring a lot of benefits in understanding how materials change with different manufacturing processes and will have a direct impact on industry. Haseeb has made a real contribution to this area of research and I wish him every success in his engineering career.”

Nuffield Research Placements provide students in the first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) course the opportunity to work on authentic research projects alongside professional scientists and engineers.
